  • It is similar to jujitsu, as well as judo, and it draws quite a few striking techniques from Chinese boxing, hence the quickness and efficiency of the punches and kicks that Snake and The Boss both throw. There are no dazzling moves which allow practioners to throw a person several feet in CQC, nor are there any spinning roundhouse kicks, flips, or aerial moves. It's all about quickly taking an enemy out; fights involving the style don't typically last much longer than a few seconds.

  • As can be seen at 1:35 and 2:03, the knife isn't always used to wound or kill, because on some missions, guards must be kept alive. Some strikes use the butt-end of the knife's hilt. In the examples from the video that I posted, it should be noted that the non-cutting edge of the knife's blade is serrated. Both of those examples have Snake using those serrations as leverage to dig into the back of an enemy's neck, letting the pain persuade his opponent downward.

  • On a side note, I taught the pistol disarmament that the Boss does to Snake at 0:15 to some of my students this week. I also modified it to defend against a straight punch to the head.

  • Thanks for the reference, 800strong. I checked his stuff out and it was quite intriguing!

  • look up the youtube channel "cqcchief" to get some interesting videos pertaining to cqc, including some strike countering demonstrations and disarms, and even a video demonstrating a counter using a jammed assault rifle as an impact weapon

  • True.

I think the man that advised Hideo Kojima and the MGS series is Motosada Mori...he was a former paratrooper with the Japan Self Defense Forces. He performed the motion capture CQC for MGS and it's based on JSDF martial arts (which is based on Okinawan Karate such as Shotokan and some Kenpo).

Funny thing is, I've been mimicking Snake's CQC during my own training at times :)

  • CQB is the opposite of a martial arts style. It's basically a training course you would be put through in the military to teach you how to use your weapons effectively in close quarters situations, WITHOUT having to use hand-to-hand combat. CQC is totally different; it is strictly a martial arts style. In CQC, practitioners may hold a gun, but the gun is used as an impact weapon (as in you hit people with it, among other melee-related actions) every bit as much as a distance weapon

  • CQB just refers to a style of engagement in close quarters using flash bangs and quick, accurate firing to take out multiple targets. CQB is what the guards in MGS2 would use in a "clearing" status, when you're hiding in a room and they enter and try to find you.

  • i think so, its like jujitsu, and that shit is dangerous, way dangerous ....

  • yeah, Master Miller calls it CQB in MGS on ps1
