The author, Peter Beagle, actually did write a short sequel a while back, called "Two Hearts". It's quite different, told by a little girl, and takes place in the future when Lir is an old king who is about to die. You can Google it, and read it online if you want.
Good luck with your own story. :-)

@Prov1210 well in the book smendric told her about a similar story about a unicorn and a young girl the unicorn became human they both fell in love they married and they both died years later they had no children. in a sense its kind of like if arowen from the lord of the rings chose to stay with her people rather then stay with aragorn

i agree. its a more refreshing end no happily ever after but still an end

its a really sweet movie and we dont need to over analyze it

@Janiqua its about the unicorn losing her childlike innocence and experiencing emotional pain and regret. However this also makes her stronger and able to fight back the bull which no other unicorn was able to do. The message is growing up involves sacrifice and personal hardship but it will make you stronger and able to stand up. Nothing to do with gender roles.

@Prov1210 I agree it is about sacrificing and about shedding child like innocence. The unicorns are childlike in that they never experience real pain or regret. However this unicorn makes a great sacrifice and is shed of her innocence. I feel this passage is about a child going into adult hood by always doing what is right despite personal suffering.
"I have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet. I am full of tears and hunger and the fear of death, although I cannot weep, and I want nothing, and I cannot die. I am not like the others now, for no unicorn was ever born who could regret, but I do. I regret..unicorns are in the world again. No sorrow will live in me with that joy-save one. And I thank you for that part, too. Farewell good magician.I will try to go home now." those are my favorite lines in the movie & book, unforgetable

Her path was to save the unicorns, not go off with the prince. He understood that. It would have been selfish. Doing the right thing usually means sacrificing your wants. Also at the beginning it said unicorns protect forest animals. I guess if she didn't go back to her forest, the creatures would've died? Or the writer just wanted to have a sad ending. Who knows.
