NDP 2011 celebration to extend beyond The Float@Marina Bay
By Monica Kotwani | Posted: 20 July 2011 1229 hrs

SINGAPORE: This year's National Day celebrations will extend beyond The Float@Marina Bay to include some 100,000 Singaporeans around the Marina Bay waterfront and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

Titled "NDP 2011 Celebrations", the event will include eight organisations and celebration hotspots, including the Esplanade, the Singapore Flyer and Young NTUC.

The locations will have a variety of performances, as well as the LIVE telecast of the parade. The committee expects some 100,000 Singaporeans to turn up at the various locations.

Having gone into the heartlands last year, organisers said Singapore's 46th birthday celebrations will make the most of the completed Marina Bay skyline.

There will be a ring of festivities around Marina Bay and RWS, including carnivals, pre-parade games and even a flea market.

RWS will also provide free entry for some 5,000 Senior Citizens to Universal Studios Singapore.

Young NTUC' said the highlight of its celebration will be in breaking the record it set in 2008 for the largest human flag, anticipating some 13,000 people to make up the human Singapore flag at the Padang.

Another highlight of the celebration - "The Pledge Moment" - will kick off at about 8.10pm, when the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) chime is played across the island.

"Wherever they are - whether they are at home, or whether they are out taking a stroll in the park, playing basketball, playing soccer in the street soccer courts - when they hear the SCDF chime, we hope that Singaporeans can take a moment's pause to recite the pledge and sing the National Anthem as one people," said LTC Tong Yi Chuen, Chairman of Branding & Publicity Committee, NDP 2011.

This year's Pledge Moment will also include some 26 private and public partners across 1,200 locations, including Starbucks Singapore, Sakae Holdings and NTUC FairPrice.

Singaporeans can also capture their Pledge Moments and stand to win prizes in the Pledge Moment Competition.

Entries can be filmed and uploaded on YouTube, and links can be sent via contest forms available at www.ndp.org.sg. Alternatively, entries can be sent by post.

Organisers said the Helix Bridge will be closed, and have encouraged the public to commute via public transport on the day.
