Paul E. Garrah, Lt. Col, USA [Ret.], Junior ROTC Instructor, Golden Gate H.S., has been named the first James V. Mudd Fellow by the Leadership Collier Foundation.

The James V. Mudd Fellowship was created by the Leadership Collier Foundation to honor former County Manager, Jim Mudd, for his outstanding leadership in the public service and for his contributions to the Collier County community. The Award is intended to underscore Mudd's legacy of stewardship, to enhance and support existing LCF initiatives and to provide funded scholarships and distinctive recognition to LCF leadership program participants.

The fellowship is awarded on an annual basis. The recipient is given full tuition to participate in one of the Leadership Collier Foundation's annual programs, including Leadership Collier, The Leadership Institute, Growing Associates in Naples (GAIN), or Youth Leadership Collier.

Paul Garrah was selected by a confidential committee based on a review of his contributions that mirror the attributes exemplified by Jim Mudd's significant public service career: Integrity -- doing what is right -- always; Inclusively and positively achieving results by engaging outstanding people on mutual goal attainment; Demonstrating selfless service to the community by placing others before self; and providing Leadership that inspires others to not only follow, but join as a leader.

Paul served our nation for 22 years in the Unites States Army. Upon retirement, he has devoted 22,000 hours of school and community service to Collier County's youth. In 2007 The Education Foundation of Collier County selected him as Teacher of Distinction. In 2010, the Florida Veterans of Foreign Wars selected him as the Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year for Florida, the first time a Junior ROTC instructor received this honor. Col. Garrah has been accepted into the Leadership Collier class of 2011
