MP Elizabeth May: Asbestos w/ Christian Paradis (Question Period June 23, 2011)

Ms. Elizabeth May (Saanich—Gulf Islands, GP): Mr. Speaker, I would like to share with all members an excerpt from an international newspaper about what happened yesterday in Geneva. As opponents to listing chrysotile became sparse, the elephant was left with nowhere to hide. Tempers flared as Canada confirmed it would not join any consensus on listing chrysotile. When will, in the name of God, the government change its mind? I ask you in the name of your friend Chuck Strahl. Twenty-four hours remain. Change your position.

Hon. Christian Paradis (Minister of Industry and Minister of State (Agriculture), CPC): Mr. Speaker, for more than 30 years, the Government of Canada has promoted the safe use of chrysotile, which can be used safely in a controlled environment. Today, the International Trade Union Movement for Chrysotile, which represents hundreds of thousands of workers, came out in support of this position because it believes that chrysotile can be used safely. That is the position reflected in the convention.

... that conservative is retarded if it can be used safely then show us proof show us that all those people in 3rd world countries dont have cancer from asbestos and show them how its safe instead of justifying cancer by saying it CAN be used safely why not tell them how to use it safely
