Journal Notes Sept 2013-Playa Miramar - Mexico
Playa Miramar is located in the northern part of the sea of Cortez, about 30 min from Puerto Penasco Mexico.
The gringos call it Rocky Point. Mexicans call it Penasco. Jacques Cousteau called it the Aquarium of the world. But call it what you will, this place is no doubt a hidden jewel. Calm, emerald green waters surrounded by the harsh Sonoran desert landscape.
I've been visiting this part of Mexico for over 13 years now and it still comes as a surprise to me how lovely this whole area is and how much there's yet to be explored.
It was my first time at Miramar, a short drive east from Playa Encanto, where we stayed during our last visit. This time, I had the pleasure to share the experience not only with my beautiful Natalia but also with our dear guests Angie and Jonathan, who joined us from Phoenix.
The winds did not cooperate and I was only able to Kitesurf for a mere 20 min. It was a quick and yet beautiful sunset session. We were, however, able to scramble some SUPs and play some beach volleyball with our neighbors at the Mayan Palace. The weekend wasn't necessarily an 'action-packed' adventure with life defying thrills and adrenaline sports.
But as it -the weekend- came to an end, a moment of clarity hit me in the face. An epiphany if you will...The realization that maybe the days when I needed to constantly be searching for 'crazy adventures' are perhaps over. That maybe I can be just as happy sitting in the shade with a good book and an umbrella drink doing things that normal people do while on vacation. Relax.
Am I getting old and tired of being always on overdrive and 'on the go' ? Maybe... Maybe not. I'd hope not, at least. Umbrella drinks by the pool and reading books when there's a whole wild ocean just waiting to be explored seem a bit of a stretch. I refuse to be that guy just yet. But one thing is for sure, I truly enjoyed this past weekend. I didn't have to jump off cliffs, Kitesurf from dawn to dusk nor spearfish in shark infested waters in order to get that feeling of fulfillment. It felt good to just kick back and relax for once and do mundane activities that ordinary people do.
I enjoyed relaxing at the pool. I enjoyed waking up later in the morning and cooking breakfast. I enjoyed introducing friends to the novelty of new water activities (SUP and Kitesurfing) and seeing the excitement in their faces.
And above all, I enjoyed just being in the company of the girl I love and found peace with whatever activities the day brought along, action-packed or not, as long as I had sweet Natalia by my side.
The video that follows is a glimpse of our relaxing weekend. If you like, leave a comment and share it with friends.
