Biomedical engineering labs at the University of Cincinnati develop, design and test new medical devices.

A number of companies from throughout the region are investing in this research because of the potential economic payoff, and a few start-up companies have already begun thanks to medical-device innovations begun at the university.

One is Radlyn, LLC, a medical-device company. UC developed a multi-purpose stylet, and this device led to the founding of Radlyn. The stylet is used to reduce infection, specifically pneumonia, among hospitalized patients.

Other established firms are supporting this medical-device research at UC, including Procter & Gamble as well as Ethicon Endo-Surgery in Blue Ash, Ohio, a maker of advanced medical devices for minimally invasive procedures; and Atricure, a developer and manufacturer of cardiac surgical ablation systems.

UCs biomedical engineering program graduates are hired by companies locally, regionally and statewide because they are students who use their research skills and training to good effect. And on a number of occasions, these students have formed their own entrepreneurial companies.
