  • Does anyone happen to know the names of the first two marches being played here? I know the first one (which they are only playing the intro) is one Longview played often and I also want to know the name of the other one.

  • Coming across the field they are playing "Trombone Section" March by Chambers. The start of the second half (with the 4 trumpets) is the trio of the same march.

The first full march in the first half is "Troopers Tribunal " by Fillmore.

  • DEFINITELY a Kunkel band!!

  • Oh, wow, does this bring back memories from so very long ago. I was in John Kunkel's band probably before some of you were even born. I spent 7 years with him as my band director in Cleveland, TX. We had the best band anywhere! I watch this routine and see "my" band doing the same drills. Mr. Kunkel was the best and I will never forget him or the experience of being in his band. I graduated in 1965, so see, it was a long time ago.

  • hi mr ingram it me joshua....the tuba

  • Great show!! Notice that much of this takes place at intervals of only 2 steps. If the person ahead of you messes up their rank, you had to 'run them over and keep going' I was in the Victoria High School band from south Texas. We marched 8 to 5, but at close two step intervals. Our instructions were if someone was in our spot that didn't belong, just keep on going!!

  • In a word...AWESOME!

  • this year we actually did some pin wheels in our after-contest drill. they were great but nothing compares to this.

  • @excalibur1812 I know what you mean. Even in our version of corp style, we had to have precision, tight turns and crisp mark time marches to present. Still wish more students were taugh the discipline we had back then. Some are good but most have morphed into some type of rap, hard rock or just plain bad sound. Hope it make a comeback.

  • I graduated from Killeen High School in 1979 and our directors used to drive over to the Longview Contest just to record the East Texas bands so that they could bring back the tapes for us to watch and emulate. We too, marched military style and this is what our directors wanted us to look like!! Many people pooh-pooh military marching and call it boring. Nothing could be further from the truth. And you have to have one HELL of a band to play those really hard marches w/great technique.

  • I graduated from Daingerfield High in '84 and whenever we went to contest we always stayed to see Longview High perform. We marched corp style but you must appreciate the style and precision of the LHS band. It was always a blast watching them. Mr Kunkel was one of the best and our director, Mr Dean Watson always made sure we watched the band to see a different side of marching. Still would like to see more bands march military with the discipline of the LHS band back then. Nice post.
