Ludwig : Italy, 1972

Ludwig is a 1972 film by Italian director Luchino Visconti about the life and death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Visconti's muse, Helmut Berger, stars as Ludwig, while Romy Schneider reprises her role as Empress Elisabeth of Austria in a very different portrayal as in the 1950s Sissi trilogy.

The film was made in Munich and other parts of Bavaria, Germany and at the following locations: Berg Castle, Castle Herrenchiemsee, Castle Hohenschwangau, Castle Linderhof, Ettal and Neuschwanstein Castle. During filming in Linderhof Castle the temperature in the famed mirror hall got so high that one of the mirrors cracked as a result, it is to this day the only broken piece in the original decor of the hall.

  • The unearthly beauty of both Romy Schneider and Visconti's movies.......and with that divine Wagner music, I am drunk with this lost era, cruel and filled with misery and treachery it may have been, ....now a filtered glimpse one hundred thirty five years later, leaves a lingering nostalgic flavor.

  • Hello Sadanori, this moovie is beautiful,I think I saw it.

  • @oktanbooster Emmm.......I appreciate your input on this. Actually the world doesn't change that much, in my opinion.

    The time was not so good as many people think - there were many wars for example, the people (like today) earned someones very much - other people nearly nothing and had very hard to work.

    At this time there was no health insurance, pension, electricity was very rare of course too at this time.

    Today many thinks are of course false too - but would you really like to have a king with absolutly power, with no boundaries what he can/will do? I would not like this.

  • There was a subtitle mistake over 6 minutes in. They said Ludwig should marry the tsar's daughter. Then Sisi says "tsarevna", which means the tsar's daughter, but the subtitles said "tsarina", which is the tsar's wife.

  • 1)

    Was hat man dir, du armes Kind, getan?

    Kennst du es wohl?

    Dahin! dahin

    Möcht ich mit dir, o mein Beschützer, ziehn.

    Kennst du den Berg und seinen Wolkensteg?

    Das Maultier sucht im Nebel seinen Weg;

    In Höhlen wohnt der Drachen alte Brut;

    Es stürzt der Fels und über ihn die Flut!

    Kennst du ihn wohl?

    Dahin! dahin

    Geht unser Weg! O Vater, laß uns ziehn!

    Johann Wolfgang Goethe

  • You sir, Mr. AHappyTanpopo, I extend my heartfelt thanks to you for having posted this wondrous film, and humbly beg the question, if you could perhaps upload "The Leopard", 1963, if it is within your abilities?
