Riffing on a pro-wrestling match, Bag Wars features two kinds of chips battling it out for flavor dominance. As a crowd of assorted creatures scream and shout, Smokin Cheddar Barbeque and Wild White Nachos go at it. At the end of the :30, viewers are directed to a website where they can vote for their favorite flavor.
We built all of the characters from scratch and consequently took total control of what they would look like and which characters were going to have more articulation for the animation. The characters were created to have a designer-toy vibe, reminiscent of Japanese-influenced characters.
Designing the characters and the set was relatively easy. The biggest challenge was animating about 100 characters and executing some of the stunts the bags had to do, in particular when one of the bags back-flips onto the ropes with the stool. That two-second shot took sixteen hours to shoot, and several days of rig-removal.
In terms of the set design, we built it with found objects related to Doritos and snacking: The ropes on the ring are made out of drinking straws and the floor is made of paper towel. Barbeque bottles are stationed on each of the four corners of the ring and bag clips, drinking cups, and cheese graters were also used.
No puppets would be harmed in the process.
Smokin Cheddar BBQ won, and it was in stores until February 2008. They brought the flavor back briefly in October 2009 for ASYLUM626 or something. They need to bring it back!
