No, actually. I've done this multiple times for rehearsals and it works fine, even with the amp within ten feet. Most amps don't have enough power to feed back unless the mic is literally inches away. And since both Coachwhips and Thee Oh Sees apparently use the same output for vox and guitars, the chance of feedback is minimal at most.

Dwyer sings through a converted telephone receiver AND through an amp. The combo of two heavy compressors and the band limiting of the receiver lead to the distorted, garbled, and fucking awesome sound you hear. Digitally, you can drop out the right points in an EQ graph and throw on a brickwall to get that sound.
