it's from Plato's "Symposium" that humans originally had 4 arms, 4 legs, and a single head made of two faces, Zeus split them in half, condemning them to spend their lives searching for the other half to complete them:.half human = halber mensch
the song (and not plato) puts that together with another story from plato:"Allegory of the Cave" . halber mensch is one of the prisoners in Plato's famous 'cave' and can see only shadow on the walls,but not the reality.
