reed and joel "bend" some rules of chase decorum.. but the footage they get is just so invaluable for study. Basically you have the perfect chasers.. educated.. a little lucky, and they got `nad.. keep it up !! someday I'll buy ya beer when you chase up here in the land of cow shit and beer farts (WI) !!

Risky pursuits - tornaodo-chasing, hurricane-chasing, volcanoes (my obsession) all I think have one thing in common. Given that, on the whole, the closer in you are the more detailed and better observations you get, it's a matter of trading personal safety against quality of observation. It's up to the scientist or documenter in question to decide where to draw that line. Risk isn't taken lightly: responsible risk is calculated risk even where it looks scary.

Well Kevin, a couple of things: this PBS documentary focuses on the human aspect of chasing storms, as opposed to research methods (though some of the world's top professors were contributors). Also Reed and Joel are both degreed meteorologists, with Reed currently completing his PhD. Though Reed is definitely a controversial guy!
