Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday October 3, Baltimore City firefighters at Steadman Station downtown heard a loud crash a block from the firehouse, and upon investigation found a crash involving a Maryland Transit Administration light rail train and a Chrysler Sebring car on Howard Street near Lombard Street. Firefighters found the car wedged under the front of the train with the driver heavily trapped, although two passengers were able to self-extricate and sustained only minor injuries. Firefighters winched the car out from under the nose of the 4-car train and began removing the cars roof and doors to free the driver. Firefighters from BCFD Engine 23, Rescue 1 and Truck 16 were able to free the driver after about a 30-minute extrication, and she was transported via Medic 23 in serious condition to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Witnesses told police the car was traveling westbound on Lombard Street when the driver ran a red light at the intersection with Howard Street, where the northbound occupied train struck the car broadside and pushed it approximately 50 75 feet up the street until both stopped on the side of the 1st Mariner Arena.
