Gelatin. North American "Marshmellows" today are not actually from the egyptian marshmallow plant. It used to be an expensive import, but back in the early part of the 20th century somebody used air-blown gelatin with powdered sugar and other things to make cheap knockoffs. Because this deceit predated FDA coverage, it was grandfathered in later. It shows just how the FDA fails at basic definitions and science. They fail to act in the interest of the public all too often.
