this song, to me, is a depressingly accurate portrayal of the life of the "everyman" and how society molds you to be just like the millions of others around you, going to their 9-5, staying in uhappy relationships, losing the dreams that seemed almost attainable before society told you you could never be the person you wanted to be. this song is too real for so many people, including me.

Ahhhhh Yeaaaaa, now this brings back some happy memories. Jackson Browne is one of the greatest, singer/songwriter the rock and roll world has ever had. This song has always TUGGED at my heart for some reason. Actually alot of his songs do.
" Im gonna be a happy idiot and struggle for the legal tender" - Your music will always live in my heart Jackson. Thank you so much.
Sincerely, Mr Simba Joe....God Bless.

@ Vic1161 - thanks for the comment. Jackson's music has always been special to me. I remember seeing him in concert for the first time in1976, Madison Square Garden...3rd row in front of stage...he was so good live...it was like listening to a tape recording...he cut no corners and his voice was in PERFECT PITCH.

"are you there for the Pretender?"

I honestly don't know.
Though I do know that I AM the pretender.
Yes,since I "once had a dream that sort of
disintegrated at some point",I'm not too sure anymore of taking a "stab at a certain
way of life that I see other people succeeding at" because I never was one
for routine following(it just drains my soul)
I made the mistake of thinking "I'm gonna find myself a girl who can show me what laughter means".
PLEASE,say a prayer for this pretenderTY

Why do people believe in lies that are so easy to dispose? Education for whatever reason has stabbed us in the back.
