James understand what he did, but Mary forgives him. And because of his strong will to live, James then leaves Silent Hill along with Laura to return to the normal life again. This is the only Silent Hill 2 ending which can actually be truly considered a happy ending.

@lordbrioan That theory can also be applied to the Rebirth ending or even the UFO ending but more or less the Rebirth or In Water ending seem to connect to the SH happenings.

@TheHotFalafel The ending that was most likely cannon was the "in water" ending. Where James commits suicide by driving his car in to the water because he can't live without Mary.
Thats only because of the references in SH3 and SH4. For example: In SH3 when doug and heather are driving to Silent hill. Doug says that he did an investigation on a couple that went there and never returned.

@TheHotFalafel There was one that was kind of like this except worded less, idk, bluntly, then he carries her away. I think that one is a little better, but it's your opinion whether you like that one or this one or the Maria one. Personally I like the Maria one because he has someone at the end, though he ends on a bad note with the "other Mary" or whomever it was that he fought.

The best ending of the game, it so moving and in the same time full of hope. Everyone hates Laura but she is the one who helped James the most
