The 1st Annual NASA Nationals held at the Lexington Mid-Ohio Raceway, September 13-16th 2006. This is the final session and the Crawford STi was in second place right behind the AMS EVO coming into this session. This was a good battle between the two vehicles of such different natures.

  • I'm loving the tq/hp comments...tq is useless if you can't rev(explosions) and then the motors try to pull themselves apart(opposed engines)

  • @05EVORS - The only problem with that statement is horsepower is a derivative of torque, so without torque you will not have horsepower. While the engine being opposed makes it the most balaced engine and efficient production engine on earth. Just check out the boxer engines. Now check out RallyCross and Crawford taking on Subaru of America, Ford Rally Team and Hyundai Rally Team and beating them in RallyCross. Just wait for X-Games 2011 it should be pretty exciting.

  • 2 very different lines. The power & weight advantage of the AMS Evo was evident on the straight. What happened to the EVO? Mechanical problems? Really awesome race. The STI was always close to him.

So what were the lap results?

  • I believe the EVO had an electrical gremlin. Nothing serious

  • Very close to the horsepower, I think it was 450 torque at the wheels at that time.

  • You are correct about eh torque but there is a very good reason why the torque is not as high as you might expect. When you put on larger turbo's the power band is shifted to the right. When that happens you lose the low end grunt or torque on a dyno chart.

That is why EVO's do not make great torque because there power band is way off to the right hand side of the dyno chart compared to STI's.

As the saying goes, there is no replacement for displacement.

  • Agreed, but it's because the Subaru was in his azz that caused the EVO make that mistake. For the record I like both cars, so it comes to driver skills. But, this was not a real race, just "hot laps". It's all good!

  • The Replacement for Displacement is technology...

  • Sti are way faster than EVO ask me I just smoked an EVO yesterday in my stage 2 cbe and phython intake also pulley and other mods but to get to the point all u EVO lovers need to sell ur car and get a sti. EVO engines look like Honda engines nothing special just add turbo lol stop hating on the amazing boxer beat ass engines

  • @05EVORS,Tell that to porsche not subaru. Who keeps single handedly destroying everyone on all scales of racing ,with that (horizontal opposed engine)that pulls themselves apart .(lol)

Your 4g had many balancing issues that needed addressing over the years , so it wouldn't wobble it's self apart.

  • Now the understeer on the Impreza was sickening. The Lancer turned in so much better. I guess Subaru wants to make a friendly to drive car because all Imprezas that I know are plagued by understeer.

  • when it comes to wrc I will give it to subaru even though it was a close battle till the evo x but time attack will always be evo's as far as drag racing it's about the same the big difference comes down to the fast that evo's make power alot easier to certain mods which is why subaru spends more money, that and they got 4 cams 2 heads and a 4 cyl block that looks like it was cut in half and welded back together at the oil pan lol but still both great cars with amazing sounds and power

  • @wknose....I titally understand hp/tq relationship: all I meant was all the low/midrange torque in the world doesnt matter if you spin tires/do not continue to make tq into the rpm band. Even w/ 2.5L USA street subies usually loose against 2.0L evo's. I cant imagine how bad Imprezza would have fared all these years in the USA if they did the 2.0L like rest of world. International reviews of the 2.0 wrx vs 2.0L evo always put Evo on top. 2.5L USA model is pretty cool. >450hp boxer = rebuild?!?

  • THAT IS PROBABLY THE TRICK, FOR NOT TO BE ASHAMED ), BUT CRAWFORD FOR SURE LOWERED THE TOLD AMOUNT OF HP.

  • @nbeahan813 which they always do...lol

  • @PowShredder801 good one bro
