Words and music: Otto Harbach, Jerome Kern (1933). Many singers have made different versions of this beautiful song since the 30's: Irene Dunne (featuring it in the film "Roberta"), Vic Damone, Nat King Cole, Bryan Ferry, Jerry Garcia, etc, but the version by The Platters (late 50's) may be the most popular.

Lyrics:

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside
cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes

Smoke gets in your eyes

  • Now, I have seen your heart and it is very beautiful. So many of today's singers just sing the right notes and leave their heart in a closet somewhere. Not you Andy, thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of you. Your friends, are very fortunate. Please count me as one of your friends.
