Merci!

Sorry but I'm from Quebec and I can tell that it's far from an old irish song! Joe Dassin was a very popular singer when my mom was young.

Carrickfergus is the song known as "The Water is Wide," I think--it's also beautiful, simple, and very sad so I can see how it might be thought of in the same vein as this one.
I once came upon a tiny village, as I was walking up over a hill in Burgundy. Seeing the small stone buildings with tiny plumes of smoke coming from their chimneys made me think of this song.

weird i know it as the song from joe dassin. Maybe he made one that is similar?

Sorry mate!.
This is an old Irish song, call Carrickfergus
Wrote in the 19th century in Gaelic, English words where add latter.
I wish I was in Carrickfergus, only for night in Ballygran.
