I have been asked a couple of times why I've switched from arranger keyboards like the Tyros and PAX2 to a M3 and DAW setup for home recording.

Hopefully this video will answer that.

Follow me on Twitter : @daniellehallett

Setup:
Sonar X1 Producer
Line 6 UX2
Alesis Multimix 8 USB
Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro
Lots of VST plugins
Korg M3 88 Workstation
JMT Orchestrator

I use an X-Fi instead of a dedicated studio card as this set-up is also used for gaming (and the UX2 and Mixer provide high quality audio).

The music is called 120 Proof by Stephen Cox and is encoded into MP3 by Sonar, the track is actually playing on the sequencer, but I've added the track separately to the video rather than use the camera mic.

I've slightly remixed the original levels and and am using Guitar Rig 4 for two of the lead guitar tracks to give an idea of the audio processing power of Sonar.

  • Which vsts would you recommend for a beginner?

  • @reservation80 To be honest, you can do almost everything with the stock plugins, "out of the box". So start there and see what you are into :)

  • Watch drinking stuff around your equipment. I had a new HP laptop and my wife was using it and spilled a glass of iced tea in it. It was instantly toast. Then I had to spend over a grand to replace it so be careful.

  • @MrNocaster1 I do, that's why the drink is on a separate shelf to the keyboard :)

  • Now you just need a nice set of audio monitors...

  • @robvk6 I do, you just can't see them in the video. There are a pair of Tannoy M20 Gold MkII's above and out of frame :)

  • @DanielleHallett Are you using the same host software on each screen? If so , How did you get the all n sync?

  • NOW ALL YOU NEED IS A SINGER,NICE LEAD GUITAR AND RIFFS ARE AWESOME

  • professional studio! But sonar x1 may be a bit tough to use for beginners

  • @reservation80 When u are Beginning dont ask for plugin recommendation as a beginner ask for pro plug ins recommendation. i would leave that question for gears xD

  • Dude awesome work. It sounds so professional. Did u record all the guitar takes by Line 6 UX-2? How good is it for recording vocals and other instruments like keyboard???

  • I have an xf-fi sound card and do gaming on that as well :) do you run eyefinity on those screens? or nvidia 3d vision? also does the multimix work as a sound card while recording? it records simultaneous tracks right?

    Thanks!

  • os projetos do sonar 8.5 abre no sonar X1?

  • this is so sick, and i love your set up too
