Ternopilski kashtany (Chestnuts of Ternopil city) - Ukrainian song by Volodymyr Verminsky (from Ternopil). Song about the city of Ternopil (Тернопіль / Tarnopol ) in western Ukraine. Its has 217.300 inhabitants and is the center of Ternopil region (oblast) with population more than 1 million and 107.924. It belonged to Austro-Hungarian empire (1772-1918) and to Poland (til 1939), being in the historic area of Galicia (Halychyna / Galizien). Nowadays its a big center of Ukrainian patriotism and Ukrainian language. Old pre-war historic postcards of Ternopil featured. There was significant Jewish and Polish population in the city. Jews (mainly Polish speaking) made 44 % of the population in 1931. The rest were Poles and Ukrainians. In 1945-1946 Soviet authorities deported most of Poles to Poland (mainly to the new western Polish territories around Wroclaw). Today the city is nearly exclusively Ukrainian. Unlike in the east Ukrainian cities, the Russian language is unheard in Ternopil region - the region has the highest percentage of ethnic Ukrainians (97.8 %) in all of Ukraine.
