It's one of those ahead of the game simulations. Within a few years, I'm positive hardware will reach a point that such complex effects will be commonplace. Moore's law is, after all, still in effect.
look up "NS2 engine preview" its a video of the upcoming game Natural Selection 2. It has Volumetric light of sorts.. I really don't know the technical details and I KNOW its no where near as dense as what's being shown here but it does look really nice and I can't remember see in any other games aside from some hack.
i loved what nvidia did for particls and smoke and other wow stuff , but i will buy nvidia hardcore card when that can be in some realtey games now a days , hope to see some game like gta working like real life , becase no point of showing that and i'm getting back to play with some crappy games with no phisics acurat playing around
Volumetric fog, coulds and smoke! Of course its not that good and there is no shadow from it, but it is volumetric. Try blowing car and then look at sun thru that smoke. It looks awesome. Also try makeing a lot of smoke and runing around it.
