Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861, sits out in the middle of Charleston harbor. The fort, which is well positioned in the harbor, served as the main defense for anyone entering Charleston, SC which was one of the busiest and wealthiest ports in the world in 1861. This boat ride out gives you an idea of how far out the fort is.
