The city of 's-Hertogenbosch articulated a new "cycle ambition" in 2009. The bicycle policy for the city is a long term plan to update cycle infrastructure (for both riding and parking) and for promoting cycling. Building for the new plan is already taking place. The city wants to become a real cycle city. The modal share of 33% in 2009 was far more than what other cities in the world have (Copenhagen barely reaches 25%) but it is just average in the Netherlands. 's-Hertogenbosch has the ambition to call itself a cycle city but wants to do so only when the modal share of cycling of all journeys in the city reaches 44%.

The first results and some background information of the new bicycle policy are shown in this video.

In other videos a closer look at 11 of the (to be) updated cycle routes in the new Cycle Network of 's-Hertogenbosch.

  • bij het station van den bosch is het voor de fietsers een ramp

  • @IJfRuiter1 en net als aan de andere knelpunten wordt daaraan door de gemeente hard gewerkt.

  • can you cycle on the roads or just the paths

  • @stealth1692 the Dutch never understand that question. Why would you want to mix in with cars if you have your own network of paths? But the answer is no. If there is a mandatory cycle path it is illegal to cycle on the road. Just as cars cannot use the cycle paths, cyclists cannot use the car lanes.

  • It took me a good while here just to get help to clean up snow to my bike storage in winter and was accommodated because I had doctor's note saying bicycle best thing for me. Couldn't get funding though from charitable organization that helps with getting wheelchairs, which are more costly and less beneficial, in my case!

  • Your work is absolutely first rate!

  • @CrunchingShark So does a bus, tram or metro.

  • I just wish they had made the cities in NL more car-friendly. Why? Well, during the winter, the cold is just agonizing. Also, if there is a fierce wind, a bicycle just wont be able to get you from a to b. A car does. In comfort.

  • @stealth1692 I'm a avid cyclist and I moved to the UK 4 years ago (I'm Dutch). I still find it a nightmare to cycle here :P

  • @markenlei ah ok its because here in england you have to cycle on the road as there are not that many paths you are allowed to cycle on
