Understandable. Sometimes early modern dance is difficult to relate to because it seems so simple and old fashioned. However, if you look at the time in which is was created and put it in context, it makes sense why it would move so many people. Also, this was just after the great depression hit in america, and many people were suffering. It embodied the teeth-gnashing, ugly feeling of true grief. Or at the very least, the awful frustrated feeling of trying to get out of of your own skin.

It stuns and amazes me, the choreographic genious and raw emotion that Ms. Graham found in a tube of material, a bench, and the subject of pain and grief. This dance is beautiful.

Martha 's creation "Lamentations" captures the essence of grief. Truly a work of art by a genius.
