Outdoor scenes are often lit by a single source, the sun, and Maya lets you create a realistic simulation of the great outdoors with the Physical Sun and Sky options through Mental Ray. Learn how to set up a basic daytime simulation in this tutorial by Stuart Christensen. By default, the Physical Sun and sky doesn't look so good but with a little tweaking it can look really sweet and open up all sorts of creative options for a final composite in After Effects.

  • Is it possible to add paint effects to Mental Ray rendering?

  • @SweaterSwagg Check out the tutorial called Maya 2011 Convert Paint Effects Stroke to Polygons and that should be a real help for getting the paint effects to Render with Mental Ray!

  • Man, THANK YOU for these tutorials! Question: would you say the graphics cards for your Mac work well with Maya? I heard they might not be the best.

    Thank you!

  • @GleamAndGlimmer No, they all work great!

  • May you do a tutorial on Ocean waves?

  • @SweaterSwagg Check out all my tutorials!

  • Jeff Goldblum just taught me Maya.

  • How do you render fluids? Do you render them seperately, and then put it all back together in layers, lets say like..Photoshop?

  • thanks for this great tutorial, your didactic is very good ;)

  • @3DesignerAJW Thanks! Sometimes my screen recording program, hotkeys, and Maya don't work well together, and sometimes they do, I experience strange "situational hangups" every so often....I personally think it's the codewriters messing with me...or maybe I'm just paranoid....(chuckles) =)
