  • GENIUS I SAW HIM AND HIS BAND IN SAN JOSE 2 OR 3 YEARS AGO HE PLAYED THIS AND BEMSA SWING APPARENTLY HE DID A WHOLE MONK ALBLUM CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIM AGAIN HE WAS BORN IN 1927 DON'T FOR GET TO GIVE UR JAZZ FRIENDS HIS ALBLUMS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

  • @atpal Do you have an ear!? The harmonies on this charts are great. And if you think it sounds easy it's because the band plays it extremely well....As a musician I can relate to the fact that when you are in a group that can read well and collectively are playing their asses off, a difficult chart played well will sound easy.....if you play an instrument pick up your horn, better yet try to play this piece in your bigband.....

  • This is a really hip chart!

  • Is it not a particularly good chart? So Holman wasn't really interested in doing it...

Holman must be a genius. ..Know what it means writing those uncredibly difficult lines while not being interested? I don't care about the head..I care about the creativity displayed by the arranger and his treatment of melody going over the chords ...Don't forget Holman was arranger for the Stan Kenton band..Not everybody was capable to write charts for that orchestra...

  • @hommefriday He didn't say that he didn't like the band - he doesn't like the -chart-.

The band sounds amazing and makes a VERY difficult chart sound easy, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not a particularly good chart in the first place. The head is basically unrecognizable and the opening 200+ bar unison thing he wrote gets downright -boring- after awhile.

As I said in a prior comment, I think this is a chart he just wasn't really interested in doing in the first place.

  • @atpal I agree. The chart really isn't even Just Friends, it's basically an extended solo written for the band as a unit. Unless you happen to recognize the changes as Just Friends, you won't even catch the brief mention of the head he throws in at the beginning.

Bill Holman's writing is usually much, MUCH better than this. I'm guessing this is a chart he wasn't really interested in doing.

  • James Moody is The Man.

  • @atpal I think you think wrong.

  • Hello, My name is Salvador, are very good videos, Congratulations !!!!!!

  • Holman. Moody. A swingin' rhythm section - and horns that are right in there with them. So damn good!
