Note: I bumped into an illustration of a similar insect which was labeled a rove beetle. I think this is some sort of rove beetle as its shape and behavior match what I am reading. This large insect (forgot to measure it but guess it to be 1"+) was flopping about so energetically I only got one still photo that wasn't blurred. I removed the one large mite but its behavior stayed the same. I couldn't see anything else wrong with it. It seemed calmer when placed in thick leaf litter but still acted agitated.
If you are my student you can learn something here...record an insects size easily and quickly by putting a coin in the picture with it!
yup thats a spotted rove beetle and they're always a little off-balance
