On November 21, 2007, three Halifax Regional Police Officers: Const. Jonathan Edwards, Special Officer Greg McCormick, and Const. Ben Mitchell, were involved in an altercation with 45 year-old Howard Hyde, an unarmed diagnosed schizophrenic, in a booking room of a Halifax police station.

The officers were all over six feet tall and over 200 pounds, while Mr. Hyde was five foot eight and overweight. Instead of restraining him with physical force which could have been done relatively easily, a Taser was deployed several times eventually leading to Mr. Hyde's death 30 hours later. One of the officers, believed to be McCormick, can be heard taunting Mr. Hyde, "You're gonna be doing the fucking dance there, Howard," moments before a Taser is deployed for the first time. None of the officers were ever charged or disciplined for their actions.

As citizens of Halifax, or anywhere for that matter, we cannot tolerate this injustice, and must make sure everything is done to make sure this sort of tragedy never happens again.

  • netting guns.

yes appropriate training is essential to the effective use of any law enforcement tool.

  • That's probably not the technical term, but they shoot out these nets that totally incapacitate a person. They are probably a little large to carry around all the time though. I agree with your comments regarding training.

  • i dont care about the technical term, i just love the idea of modern day bad guys caught up in a net. especially if its effective.

  • I agree!

  • When I first saw this I was enraged.

But after I thought about it-

They could scare him short term but not victimise him long term.

Because police are famous for BULL.period.

The dead guy should laugh too- they knew nothing genuine about him to hit him with.

  • that bench looks fimiliar to me .

  • I have mental illness, and I no longer trust the police, for fear of getting killed,,police get away with murder and they know they can get away with it, bottom line is,,if a normal man kills a schizo like my self,,hes a hero.If a schizo kills a normal man,,hes a demon,,

  • "justice at work" ... are you fucking retarded?

You don't tase someone who's held down by 2 guys. People who defend this shit are worse than the cops. They got psychological shit to deal with. People who defend shit like this tho, you just have your head so far up your ass you can't tell there's shit coming out of your mouth.

  • @SkInHoUnD you make a great point. hes "jumping the gun" (lol) and not thinking about the bigger picture

  • I been in there drunk tank

  • I don't claim to know all the facts, but I do know that in my mind (and many others) this is excessive force. If you don't think that it is, then that's ok; everybody is entitled to their opinions.

Regardless, I think the inquiry is important to try to PREVENT incidents like this from happening again.

  • So your contradicting yourself by skipping atl the facts and burning the police at the stake.

Not only that, accept that your not a police officer, and know fuck all about police work just like me and everyone posting here.

Am I saying this was the right thing for police to do? NO. Am I saying its wrong? NO.

What I'm saying, is I'm just as ignorant to the world of law as you evidently are, and have to realize that things are not always as they seem.
