  • Nigeria: Police kill at will

    9 December 2009

    Press release

Amnesty International exposed the shocking level of unlawful police killings in Nigeria in a new report released on Wednesday.

"The Nigerian police are responsible for hundreds of unlawful killings every year," said Erwin van der Borght, Director of Amnesty International's Africa Programme.

"Police don't only kill people by shooting them; they also torture them to death, often while they are in detention."

  • "The majority of the cases go un-investigated and the police officers responsible go unpunished. The families of the victims usually get no justice or redress. Most never even find out what happened to their loved ones."

Police frequently claim that the victims of shootings were 'armed robbers' killed in 'shoot-outs' with the police or while trying to escape custody. These claims are often highly implausible.

  • Fifteen-year-old Emmanuel Egbo was killed by a police officer in Enugu in September 2008. According to witnesses, he was playing with other children in front of his uncle's house when three police officers came up to them. One officer pulled out a gun and shot the boy, claiming he was an armed robber. He was unarmed.

In August 2009, his family discovered his body had disappeared from the mortuary. As of November 2009, the body is still missing.

  • Amnesty International said that some police officers see the killings of 'armed robbers' in detention as acceptable practice.

  • "I've been saying the pledge since I was 3 years old. If you get these letters from Nigeria saying, 'We've got a lot of money for ya,' don't give 'em your bank account number." (Barak Obama, May 2009)

  • It is 2009. Hausa-Fulani Islamic Jihadist Genocidist and Yoruba Oligarchs like Olusegun Obasanjo have ruled Nigeria for 48 years in which all the elections and census were rigged, Sovereign National Conference refused, 62-year genocide maintained against Biafrans and 400 billion dollars of oil money squandered. It will never stop until those who resent this evil resist it. Hausa-fulani and Yoruba oligarchs like Olusegun Obasanjo has dealt grave evil against the peoples of this nation.

  • what would Nigerians do about the 2011 rigged elections?

  • Hey Mr.Okoroman,I am also a so called Nigerian.I am from south-western Nigeria and I don't belive in oneness of Nigeria. It's a mistake of 1914,the mistake of our forefathers.

But we are still all africans and we must stop campaigning RACISM and DISCRIMINATION.

I know someday,God will bring judgement on all the people that brought abnormalities on Nigeria. For they are too strong for us and they speak evil on the peoples.

  • not sure how many of these comments are actually related to district 9 but just to try and inject some common sense it's not racist to state possibilities. are there many african crime syndicates and gun dealers? yes. are all africans criminals and militias? no. we americans don't get upset when movies portray white americans as racist inbred rednecks with a shed full of guns for when jesus comes back. additionally how is eating the aliens cannibilism? THEY AREN'T HUMAN.

  • @MllG0 i myself am white and i agree with you. you guys were doing pretty good before europeans came in and hijacked your entire continent. you had advanced civilizations, unique cultures and so on. however don't overlook the fact that your leaders were as much responsible for the event as we were. contrary to popular belief white people did not do much of the slave catching actually that was other africans who then sold them to white people. do your best to progress but don't just deflect.

  • @whitedaisez

good point... whatever works for the white man (pinky), does not mean it will work for us. We need to rebuild what we stand for, and reject everything the white man promotes. We lived well, before the time of the white man, and we will live happily again, when he is gone.

  • U r a men calling for the division of Nigeria into 3 nation. I pray it won't happen. Odu-Ojukwu insert us in this mess or what u call calamity, with his crazy war.

  • @Msbea345 In the world of illusions maybe...In reality...if U let your country get fucked up, U will get fucked.

  • @aadejumo SOrry, but there's gotta be a limit of failure somewhere

  • "Three former American Ambassadors to Nigeria abandoned diplomatese and attempted calling a spade a spade (at the Achebe Colloquium at Brown University Rhode Island) regarding Nigeria's current global status, and their conclusions are not flattering at all: Nigeria's so called strategic importance to the US can no longer be taken for granted.." ------ Guardian Newspapers.
