What ended up happening is that he knew what her reaction was going to be before he stayed out. With that being said..., he used her emotions against her to gain what is called, rec, play time, or the time to manifest an hidden agendas...hummm.lol.. Ask yourself who idea was it to go on the trip...? And if he was non reactive ( emotionally or/and physically) to that idea, why now?
