The Big Eight is the percussion section of the Florida State University Marching Chiefs. These members, as well as all band members in any band across the land, have been working to hone their skills for years to achieve the precision required to perform at halftime of college football games all across the country.

This video is dedicated all of the hard working band members at college bands across the country.

Most people don't realize that there is as much talent on the field at halftime as there is during the game.

In October of 2007, I took my daughter to her first Florida State football game in Tallahassee. We were lucky to catch the Big Eight warming up and this is an excerpt from the video that I shot.

By the time the band hits the field, the Big Eight has been hard at work for over two hours.

There will be no tolerance for any insults to band members on this video. If you have something derogatory to say, don't waste your time making a comment.

If you are a fan of another school and think your band is better, go make your own damn video!

Marching Chiefs all the damn time!

  • FSU is my first choice college.

I'm still a sophomore, but that's where I intend on going for my Music Performance major and to be a part of this drumline :)

  • No one on the line has or should actively give out music for the cadences. The exercises, however, are pretty stock and should be easy enough to figure out/google.

  • damn, i was thinking about transferring to FSU and I was hoping their band would be traditional not DCI. i just have more fun playing in a traditional band

  • @TamaDrummer5309 just kidding! i feel like a retard now. 2 years ago...

  • end tenor is leaning like a mother! or maybe he just got the jank pair

  • @TamaDrummer5309 hopefully i see you there bro. im a sophomore too

  • @volcom0928

If you can get around the four main drums, doesn't much matter about the spock drums...5 or 6. Play clean and get good at reading so you can keep up. Also don't get offended if you wind up on bass the first year in college, either. they may have a lot of returning upper classmen with tenor experience. Just be a team player and play whatever you're on well and you'll get some respect and a shot at moving up when it's time. Good luck!

  • @volcom0928 it depends on how good you are at the quints.

  • im a junior in highschool right now and have been playing tenors for about a year and a half and am set on going to fsu and playing on the drumline. will it be a problem that i have only played on quints and never the sixth drum? also any pointers to practice for this drumline?? please help me out :)

  • @jaybax7 The reason for the cowbells is quite simple. Prior to, I believe, the 1996 season, Big 8 also had a latin section on the field with them. Consisting of timbales and dual bongos that had cowbells attached. As this was a main stay with Big 8 for so long, the cowbells are used in a great deal of their cadences (especially Sequence). I'm surprised that nobody else has pointed this out yet. I keep forgetting how long ago my first year with the Chiefs was, going back to 1993.

  • man that bass line is so sick wit it go marchin chiefs

  • @uclabruinsgo1 florida state always marches with cowbells on their tenors. why i believe they use it in one of their cadences. im not sure which but im pretty positive about that
