Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza

Israel launched airstrike raids on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, which it said were in retaliation to an earlier Palestinian attack.




The Israeli Defence Force said a rocket landed in the town of Beersheba, some 40 kilometres from Gaza.




There were no reports of any damage or casualties.




Hamas medical sources say one person died and five others were injured in the Israeli raids.




A separate air strike targeted a tunnel beneath Gaza's border with Egypt.




Israel says such tunnels are used to smuggle in weapons.
