The arrival of aggressive private sector space enterprises like SpaceX has changed the whole equation. Now going to the Moon first would no longer be a distraction that sucks all the focus away from Mars. On the contrary, private participation ensures multiple players, so the Moon wouldn't be able to suck everybody away from Mars. Going to the Moon first is the better idea, because it's cheaper/easier to do space tourism there, and space tech would improve faster. That gets us to Mars faster.

still don't know why we need at ERV... Just send people who don't want to come back, that way you build a colony every 2 years from the word go, instead of just exploring the planet with 5 people for a year and a half

@RevDarkehorse Why would they lie about what they find? Fair enough to fling an idea like that out there, but just think about it. They dont have anything to gain by doing that, and by lying they undo the entire effort of getting to Mars anyway, since one of the primary reasons is to seek out answers in science.

Fate?
Since when did the future suck?

4.20 HE [Zubrin] choose to go to the Mars, not because it is easy ....but because he thinks we don't have anything to do better
Columbus went with smaller ships then in the movies,

If we went to Mars, wouldn't NASA just lie about what they found? It wouldn't be the first time that NASA lied.

@vgyu8gf68 And with that, no longer have to argue with you.

@vgyu8gf68 There is just so many things wrong with that statement. But i'll just make a quick summation: There is no way a program that incredulous would ever be done due to the amount of investment and generations upon generations of work. We're already in an area of stagnation in NASA, and with recent face of cuts staring at the program's face, degradation is almost inevitable, unless a plan is created that isn't so demanding. The Mars Ref Plan in that respect, is more feasible, realistically.
that zubrin guy is cool

@vgyu8gf68 To extract such minerals would be astronomical with regards to the amount of capital needed. A barrier to contain humans that blocks radiation and potential cosmic debris alone would be incredible, not to mention the actual extraction equipment. And unlike Mars, Moon has a direct influence on Earth and tampering with the Moon too much can lead to catastrophic failure. And follow your own advice, it seems you haven't done so with Mars.
