An educational documentary on depression addressing effective counseling methods for and the truth about adverse effects of SSRIs and antidepressant medications -Purchase the complete DVD at http://www.changingourmindsmovie.com
Amidst the confusing din of the medical industry and the marketing campaigns of pharmaceutical companies, we search for the truth about Depression & Dysthymia and a path to better emotional health. Interviews with nine leading mental heath professionals and three affected individuals, discussing their experiences with depression and/or dysthymia. This film explores three aspects of these, often misunderstood conditions. We begin by developing an understanding of what depression and dysthymia are all about. These conditions are described by definition and through personal experiences. Next, leading psychiatrists and researchers share what we really know about the mind, anti-depressant drugs, and the pharmaceutical industry. We hear both sides of the story concerning the 'Nature vs. Nurture' argument as well as the truth about the effects of drugs and our limited understanding of how the brain works in a physiological sense. Most of this section is presented through juxtaposition of top professionals with strong pro-drug or anti-drug beliefs. The information they provide is both surprisingly and disturbingly similar. Finally, we explore some well understood, safer, and long lasting paths to recovery through guided cognitive behavioral therapy and other, mindful methods. The processes are described through metaphor and real life events as scientists, counselors, and individuals share their compelling stories of struggle, discovery, and catharsis. -

  • I take SSRIs and have yet to experience any problems from them. The risks are, I think, exaggerated because humans have a tendency to talk about bad experiences and keep quiet about good ones. However, medication is not a miracle cure either. You must stay in counseling, take care of your body, and manage your life too. Please don't try to scare people away from treatments that can help them.

  • I've seen SSRI's do more harm than good. Amazing this stuff is legal, but why wouldn't it be? It's a multi-billion dollar industry.

  • @Jburdo4680 since u worked in the industry can you please explain that everything goes back to normal once the drugs are stopped?

  • @dannyboidj1 yes

  • @Carlm2 well thats good that it helped so based on what you have heard in regards to psychotropic drugs they only cause brain damage when being on them for numerous years is that correct?

  • @dannyboidj1 I've taken anti-psychotics but only use them when I really have too. I've got more than depression so they really help me when I'm down. I'm loads better now. I guess my brain will go back to normal when I stop taking the prozac, but I kind of don't want to go back to normal as I might be depressed and start cutting up again.

  • @Carlm2 thats great news so you have not taken any antipsychotics? i had to take seroquel once in a while but nothing major i am off it completely now. so basically with ssri's the brain goes back to normal once you stop taking them am i right?

  • @dannyboidj1 I can still socialize and laugh on SSRI'S but find the antipsychotic drugs turn off all ability to socialize and laugh. These are one drug to stay away from if possible because I've watched videos on them which comes under neuroleptic damage. They can cause brain damage with long term use and the doctors never mention that!!

  • @Carlm2 oh sorry to hear about paxil, however are you still able to function normally, like can you socialize talk and laugh to people? thanks for answering

  • @dannyboidj1 hi, sorry about the late reply to your message. I don't think that antidepressants alter personality or alter brain function permmanently. I do think they help with low mood and in my case the anger problem too, they sort of calm me down. I've been on them since I was 16 and I'm 27 now. I have had quite a few SSRI drugs and the Fluoxetine (Prozac) is by far the best for me. Some others made me self harm and do really mad things.

  • @Jburdo4680 hey man being on the antidepressants most of your life have you noticed any change in your personality or are you the exact same person prior to taking them aside from the addiction problem? i need to know because i have been on them for 8 years i am only 21 and i hope it doesnt alter your brain function permanently (personality, receptors etc)

  • Estecy + Ritalin = AWESOME
