The Technical Support Services facilities and technical staff provide students an environment where they can become proficient in technical skills, and turn their ideas into physical reality.
Model Shop
Equipment includes several computer driven rapid prototyping machines. The shops are also completely outfitted for milling, shaping, joining and finishing of fine hardwoods, fiberboard, plywood, plastics, foam and bent laminations. Plastic vacuum-forming equipment and small-scale model making equipment for plastics and wood are available. Students may also use the shops' large selection of hand and power tools.
Photography Lab
The Photography Lab features fully-equipped black-and-white and color enlargement equipment. The black-and-white darkroom has twenty Omega D5 enlargers for 35mm, 120mm and 4"x5" film, and tray processing of prints up to 20"x24". On the color side, students may use one of ten individual color darkrooms or the 30" RA-4 processor. The mural facility allows students to enlarge negatives into huge prints up to 4'x7'. A variety of cameras (35mm, medium format, 4"x5" and digital), as well as lights, stands and tripods are available. An Agfa Duoscan flatbed scanner accommodates both transparent and opaque media.
Print Lab
The Monhoff Printmaking Lab supports work in traditional and new technology print processes including relief, photo-based lithography, intaglio, monotype, collograph, and screen-printing. Equipment includes one lithography press, two intaglio presses, and space for 10-12 screen-printing frames. A computer lab equipped with a scanner, laser and inkjet printers, student flat file storage, and a darkroom with a washout sink and U.V. exposure unit are also offered.
Lighting Studio
Students will find everything they need for fashion shoots, portraiture and still life in the spacious lighting studio, 60 x 40 ft, with a 12 x 18 ft permanent green screen. Norman strobes, tungsten lights and some natural light are available. Soft boxes, umbrellas, diffusers, reflectors and gels are standard equipment.
Metal Shop
The Metalshop offers easy access to adjacent indoor/outdoor workspaces. The shop provides equipment for cutting, forming, shaping, grinding, polishing and finishing metals, as well as for precision machining of plastic parts and metal, and all welding processes from oxy-acet to TIG. Next door to the Metalshop, the foundry facility accommodates lost wax, ceramic shell bronze casting.
Wood Shop
In the Wood Shop, students create everything from furniture to sculpture. The shop is completely outfitted for milling, shaping, joining and finishing of fine hardwoods, fiberboard, plywood, plastics, foam and bent laminations.
