"The Avengers" has a lot of memorable lines, but none so much as the now infamous "shawarma" joke. This video on the bonus DVD from Chosen Collection of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reveals where Joss Whedon got his inspiration.

I found this rewatching my Buffy special features and couldn't find it anywhere so I decided to post it myself. Follow my on Twitter @jpegfilms

EDIT: A lot of people are saying that Robert Downey Jr. ad-libbed the line. This is somewhat true. In his commentary for "The Avengers," Joss mentions that on the day, RDJ was looking for some new lines that he could play with. Joss threw him the line about shawarma and he ran with it. So yes, there was some improvisation involved, but the idea still came from Joss.
