7up commercial from 1986 featuring many old people and a song that clearly rips off Randy Newman's songwriting style.

  • This was based on Cocoon-Mania in the eighties. Remember Cocoon? John Cusak played the videotape of it for the senior citizens in "Say Anything." Cocoon=Old People Cutting Loose. But then they got hooked on the Extra Terrestrial Meth, and then they killed one of the cute aliens trying to crack open a meth egg in the pool...

  • Initially, I thought the same thing. But I also think that Steven Spielberg's segment in The Twilight Zone movie has some influence as well.

  • Ooooh good call. you are sharp. That really jogged my memory. Speilberg took that eerie melancholy and ran with it in Amazing Stories for a little while.

  • Yes, agreed on Spielberg. See also: my commercial for Amazing Stories
