I love Al Di Meola but I disagree with him when it comes to sweep picking and hammer-ons. It sounds very narrow-minded of him to say that it's ineffective in the long-run. The same thing goes for the up-up-down exercise, there are efficient alternate picking players like John Petrucci and Steve Morse that do alternate picking with exactly the same exercises but even with four strings. You'd be stupid to limit yourself only to alternate picking when there are more options to utilize.

ディメオラの教則本で昔練習したけど…
途中で挫折。
指が届かない（1F-9F）ってどうやって押さえるのだ！
しかし、３連弾かせると、奇麗さはダントツ

ディメオラ日本で一気にメジャーになったのはエレガント・ジプシーですね。当時はチャーや山岸潤史までがミュートピッキングしてましたよ。竹田和夫がマルデ・ダメオラとか呼びながらも、いきなり速弾きに走ったり。
