To build large, rounded shoulders, incorporate dumbbell lateral raises into your shoulder routine. This exercise will help enhance the width of your shoulders, giving the appearance of a smaller waist. A dumbbell lateral raise engages the muscles that draw your arm away from the midline of your body.
Standing dumbbell lateral raises engage your core muscles because you must stand erect with your trunk in a stable position. This exercise is performed by holding a dumbbell in each hand with the dumbbells either in front of you or beside you. Lift the dumbbells directly out to your side until your arms are parallel to the floor. Your elbows should be slightly bent to decrease any strain on your elbow joints. Keep your wrists in a neutral position; this means your wrists are not bent upward or downward, straining your wrist joints. Dumbbell lateral raises can also be done one arm at a time. Tightly contract your core to maintain your balance and lightly hold on to the side of an immovable object such as a dumbbell rack or an exercise machine
Dumbbell lateral raises can also be done in a leaning position, working only one arm at a time. This exercise is performed by holding a dumbbell in your right hand, standing with the left side of your body adjacent to an immovable bar. Your feet should be close to the bar as well. Hold on to the bar then lean your body to the right; raise your arm until it is parallel to the floor. Lower your arm and repeat for one set then turn around to work your left arm, holding the dumbbell in your left hand.
The intensity of this exercise depends on your goal. If you are recovering from a shoulder injury, use a light dumbbell to perform three sets of 15 repetitions. It should not be strenuous to complete each set. For muscle toning, use moderate weights at three sets of 15 to 20 reps. To build the size of your deltoids, use moderate to heavy weights for four to six sets of six to 12 repetitions.
