  • The white people in the Theatre sit together and the black people may see this as a 'no go area' so they sit in their own spot. Its a very subtle form of racism that comes from a collective white consciousness and fear of black presence.

  • i was born in Loran, Oh in 1951. i grew up there and still live nearby. definitely saw no racism! (of course there was some, since its a steel mill town, but there was nothing sanctioned or concerted)

    interesting that Toni says at the theatre she wanted to sit with her friends, not where her mother said (in the white section) meaning that she had no white friends. also, at the ice cream shop, no one made her uncle move or told him he was not welcome. it was only her perception...
