MMA President and CEO Chuck Hadden appeared on CNN Headline News this week to discuss manufacturing with Comcast Newsmakers Host Laurel Hess. His five-minute interview segment aired in a continual rotation at 54 minutes after the hour this week on CNN Headline News.

Hadden spoke optimistically about the future of manufacturing in Michigan. He pointed out that the manufacturing industry is still the number one contributor to Michigans gross domestic product and contributes more than the next two industries combined. Hadden said he believes that we are now at the bottom of this recession and that those manufacturers still in business will rebound with the economy.

During the segment, he noted that the state of Michigan needs to do its part, too, by eliminating anti-competitive practices and regulations. For example, Hadden talked about the Personal Property Tax and how it disproportionally taxes manufacturers because of the large and expensive equipment they need to produce their goods.

He also talked about other manufacturers around the state that dont get the media hype like the autos, such as pharmaceutical companies, furniture manufacturers, and food manufacturers — some of which are doing very well. In fact, many MMA members are diversifying their business, getting more high-tech and finding opportunities to expand, Hadden said. Ultimately, the auto industry will come back and MMA and Michigan will embrace the new, improved auto industry.

Manufacturing is not dead in Michigan. We have the talent, the facilities and the fortitude to build a better Michigan — and we will, said Hadden. Five or ten years from now, people will flock to Michigan because we will be the state that still makes things in America.
