An islet cell transplant can help patients who are suffering from the pain of chronic pancreatitis. The Medical University of South Carolina is one of the largest centers in the country performing this procedure. Dr. Katherine Morgan, director of the program, discusses how the transplant works from beginning to end and what patient's can expect afterwards. Hear from patient Sarah Gibbins, who had the islet cell transplant back in September.
The section of video of the patient in the hospital bed, was that taken during a follow-up visit or during her initial stay for the actual surgery. Seems she's in very good condition to have just been through such a serious surgery. I'd also like to thank you for making it clear that not all islet transplants are a success and the patient needs to be educated on the subject of diabetes going into the TP/ AIT.
