What is the brand name for this machine? I am also curious about how much it costs, too. This video is beyond cool. I'd love to get a machine like it, if I could find it somewhere or find something similar...

@Biklar @maliolani This is a National - it was 25 or 30 years ago when we got it, so unfortunately I don't remember how much it cost. But it was a lot at the time for an appliance. There's a Tiger brand mochi making machine listed on amazon.com for $260, and I'll bet the larger Japanese specialty stores like Marukai would have them available as well. (I'm pretty sure Zojirushi makes one...) Unfortunately these are sealed units nowadays, so you don't get the entertainment...

We just bought a Tiger mochi making machine that steams the glutinous rice and then "pounds" it with an impeller. But there is no instruction on when to add sugar. Does anyone know? Also, the cooked rice came out too dry for the "pounding" to work properly, so it became dry and with grains of unmixed rice in it. Seems it needs more water.

@maliolani We've never added sugar - but hopefully someone else might know? I'll see if the instructions for my mom's machine specify when to put it in.
