**DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!!**

IBM/Hitachi hard disk drives use a glass platter, instead of the various metal alloys used in other drives. The glass platters are either coated or impregnated with a metallic media,
which is what the data is stored on.

In this video, I placed the platter into a 1200 watt microwave, expecting to see similar results to seen with a CD. What actually happened was even cooler than that; The glass melted!

  • what metal is used to coat that disk? And what binders were there? You just breathed in a lot of that unknown metal vapor, and so much possibly else. Arsenic., Cadmium, Berillium, who Knows.

And, whatever might have come off that disk, is now all over an oven that likely will be used for cooking. And maybe by someone who doesn't know what had been in the oven. Bad.

  • @chromaticAbbreviatio The microwave has already been disposed of (inverter failed a few months later). I've breathed in much worse, trust me.

  • Wow i think I know what a microwave looks like

  • @oshapley Wonderful! Have you ever seen an oven? Truly amazing devices, those ovens are...

  • "DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF"

Why do people even bother with comments like this? When I upload my videos of tesla coils, 100kJ energy storage caps, and homemade plasma rifles I'll be be putting something like "go ahead and repeat this, if you kill yourself I'll just laugh at what's left of you, as well as anyone that mourns you".

  • most easily amused mother fucker ever!

  • @pikuorguk Well "DO NOT ATTEMPT" then, hpow about that? The show I usually watched (on hold now alas) always put it that way. Who would like to destroy their own microwave, shot glass, camera and face anyway?

  • I LOVE microwave shows!

  • That is not cool; that's bloody hot :D Poor shot glass though.
