Melting a glass hard disk platter

**DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF!!**

IBM/Hitachi hard disk drives use a glass platter, instead of the various metal alloys used in other drives. The glass platters are either coated or impregnated with a metallic media,
which is what the data is stored on.

In this video, I placed the platter into a 1200 watt microwave, expecting to see similar results to seen with a CD. What actually happened was even cooler than that; The glass melted!

what metal is used to coat that disk? And what binders were there? You just breathed in a lot of that unknown metal vapor, and so much possibly else. Arsenic., Cadmium, Berillium, who Knows.

And, whatever might have come off that disk, is now all over an oven that likely will be used for cooking. And maybe by someone who doesn't know what had been in the oven. Bad.
