@lazybear81: Kicking his head wouldn't be the best idea, I mean the pain in your spine is worse than the kick in the head so he'll most likely recover faster and he could still grab your foot and pull you down when you kick him.

That's a pretty good technique as far as the pushing and spreading the legs goes. After that I'd just kick him in the head and run. Why get any closer to grappling than you need to?
