The story didn't make a whole lot of sense.
Putting Beckham in ancient times is a creative angle, but a leather ball alone isn't going to distract medieval soldiers very much.
If they had the ball knocking heavy or dangerous objects onto or near the soldiers, like say burning logs, it might make more sense.
