Listen to the Honshu quake at 5,700 mi (9200 km) distance

This is a recording of the devastating March 11, 2011 quake off the Honshu coast. This is the vertical ground movement (velocity, to be precise) recorded in a 100 m (300 ft) deep borehole well in Tübingen, southwest Germany.
In real time, the record is one hour long. It has been sped up by a factor of 100, thus compressing it to 36 seconds and transforming the very low earthquake frequencies into the audible range.
Discernible vibrations were recorded for more than three hours.

Dies ist eine Aufzeichnung des zerstörerischen Bebens vom 11.3.2011 vor der Küste von Honshu, Japan. Es handelt sich um die vertikale Bodenbewegung (eigentlich die Bodengeschwindigkeit), wie sie in einem 100 Meter tiefen Bohrloch in Tübingen aufgezeichnet wurde.
In Echtzeit ist die Aufzeichnung eine Stunde lang. Sie wurde hier um den Faktor 100 beschleunigt, d.h. sie ist nun 36 Sekunden lang, und die tiefen Frequenzen des Erdbebens wurden in den hörbaren Bereich transformiert.
Auch nach mehr als drei Stunden waren die Erschütterungen noch nicht abgeklungen.
