Since 1964 the Appaloosa Horse Club has hosted the annual Chief Joseph Trail Ride. The Chief Joseph Trail Ride is a progressive ride. Its route traces, as closely as possible, the route Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce took while attempting to escape from the U.S. Cavalry in 1877. Each year the ride travels about 100 miles, taking 13 years to traverse the entire route. The 2005 route was a loop, beginning and ending at Tolo Lake, a few miles from Grangeville, Idaho. Camp was made in a different location each night, with nightly entertainment including historical speakers, music and dancing.
